Kilwon Yu was born and raised in South Korea and holds a BA in Arts and Crafts from Chung-Ang University. Since 1999, he has worked extensively in the Korean film industry as an art director, prop master, and set designer. Notably, he served as the art director on OASIS, which won multiple international awards, including honors at the Seattle, Venice, and Vancouver International Film Festivals. He also art directed THE WAY HOME (Jibeuro), which received several domestic awards, and RIKIDOZAN (Yeokdosan), winner of the Grand Bell Award for Best Art Direction in 2004.

In pursuit of further growth in the field of production design, Kilwon earned an MFA from the American Film Institute (AFI) in 2010. While at AFI, he designed the thesis film THE ESCAPE, which earned Best Production Design at the 2011 LA New Wave Film Festival. Since then, he has worked on numerous U.S. film and television projects as a production designer, art director, and set designer.

Kilwon has also contributed to the global design community. In 2013, he was invited to Taiwan as a guest lecturer for a TV production program hosted by the Ministry of Culture. In 2014, he was selected as the sole U.S. production designer to participate in Berlinale Talents during the Berlin Film Festival.
